We successfully conducted a live demonstration of the DR SYSTEMS SCANRAY® F – a flexible, portable, wireless digital radiography system – during the BIAM&WELDING fair. 🚀 Visitors had the opportunity to see firsthand how SCANRAY® F enables fast, accurate, and efficient inspections, combining mobility with high-quality imaging for a wide range of industrial applications. 🔍 Thank you to everyone who visited us and showed interest in our solutions. 🤝 If you didn’t get a chance to attend or would like a personalized demonstration, feel free to reach out—we’d be happy to arrange one for you. 📩
Today, we conducted a successful live demo of our DR SYSTEMS automatic pipeline weld inspection solution XPRESS-SCAN DW for PETRONAS and other potential customers in Malaysia. The event was kindly organized by our trusted partners, Altec Industrial and Engineering Supply Sdn Bhd and Kostec NDT Consultancy Sdn Bhd.
An interesting detail of this demonstration was the use of a half-sine X-ray source from Dandong Aolong. Due to its operating cycle — up to 5 minutes of exposure followed by the same cooling time — the full circumferential scan took slightly longer than usual. Even so, we achieved an excellent full-weld image, with a productivity boost of up to three times that of the manual SCANRAY 1043F system and more than six times that of conventional film radiography. On large-scale pipeline projects, these savings quickly add up — turning into weeks or even months gained over the course of the job.
Using the right technology doesn’t just improve inspection quality — it transforms into efficiency and project timelines. And the earlier the transition begins, the greater the long-term benefit.

- Total operating time for the whole weld: 19 minutes (including 2 stops for the tube cooling).
- Obtained sensitivity: 0.32 mm (exceeds the ASME requirements by 1 wire).
Filters in DR-SOFT – your helping hand for reliable results.
Advanced image processing plays a key role in modern digital radiography, significantly simplifying daily inspection workflows. Well-designed filters help operators quickly navigate images, highlight subtle indications and bring potential defects into clear focus. This not only reduces the time required for analysis but also minimizes the risk of overlooking critical details, ultimately improving both testing quality and operator confidence. Even though we always advise performing the final decision-making about flaws on the original (raw) image, the filters serve as a powerful aid that enhances visibility and clarity.
DR-SOFT includes three built-in filters designed to assist inspectors across a wide range of scenarios:
– Filter A provides a soft, mild enhancement, making the image visually closer to conventional radiography and more familiar for operators transitioning from the film-based method.
– Filter B applies strong contrast enhancement and is well-suited for rapid screening of welds, especially when using X-ray generators. It allows quick localization of potential indications, which can then be carefully evaluated and confirmed on the original image. In addition, this filter is useful for specific tasks such as tangential wall thickness assessment.
– Filter C is optimized for high-energy sources such as Ir-192. It reduces the perceived “graininess” typical of such exposures, resulting in a cleaner and more readable image.
In addition to filtering, DR-SOFT provides other powerful tools for localized image viewing adjustments. One of the most effective is a “magic wand” (Adjust LUT by rectangle), which enables precise correction of gray levels within a selected area. This allows the operator to enhance visibility of subtle details without altering the overall image characteristics. Also, switching between positive and negative display modes further improves visual perception and can be helpful in challenging cases.
All of these instruments are included in DR-SOFT by default and do not require any additional payment. When used correctly, they do not replace standard evaluation practices, but make the testing process faster, more consistent and more efficient.
If you would like to see how these tools perform in real inspection conditions, feel free to contact us. We will be happy to arrange a convenient time and walk you through the functionality in a live online session.
To everyone celebrating today, warm Easter wishes from our team. May this day bring a sense of renewal, meaningful moments with those close to you, and time to slow down and enjoy the day.

In our field, the discovery of X-rays is rightly seen as a defining moment. But don't forget that behind every breakthrough, there is a person. Today, we mark the birthday of Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen – a scientist whose character shaped not only his work, but its impact on the world. Known for his humility and strong principles, he chose not to patent his discoveries, believing they should remain accessible for the benefit of all. He also declined titles of nobility, preferring to stay focused on science rather than recognition. This approach helped accelerate the adoption of his work across disciplines and industries, and set a tone that still resonates today. At DR SYSTEMS, we see this as a reminder that progress is driven not only by technology, but also by the values behind it – precision, responsibility, and a commitment to making solutions truly useful in practice. A moment to acknowledge the person behind a legacy that continues to shape and improve our industry.
Here’s one more real on-site example of tangential profilometry performed with DR. With the automatic wall thickness measurement tool available in DR-SOFT, this type of NDT becomes straightforward and reliable, delivering clear results with minimal effort. The large active area of the flat-panel detector further speeds up the process, allowing wider sections to be covered in a single exposure. When facility safety is critical, relying on modern, proven inspection tools is not an option — it’s a necessity. DR SYSTEMS helps you meet that challenge with confidence. - Object: 6" steel pipe, 8 mm wall thickness. - DR system: SCANRAY 3643 PRO. - Source: Ir-192, 16 Ci. - Exposition time: 4 frames by 30 seconds (120 seconds total). - Size calibration by ball bearing (1").
Eid Mubarak to all our partners, clients, and colleagues who are celebrating. During this special time, we wish you and your loved ones peace, strength, and well-being. We truly value our cooperation and remain committed to supporting you. Wishing for calm, stability, and brighter days ahead.
Detector positioning is often one of the most time-consuming parts of DR inspection. To simplify this step, we developed the C-ARM – a compact yet very handy accessory to securely mount the SCANRAY detector and Gamma collimator on a pipe. A convenient clamping mechanism ensures fast positioning and smooth movement along the weld while keeping the pre-selected exposure angle and distance. This makes the testing process faster, more stable, and easier to perform, even on small-diameter pipes where traditional mounting solutions are difficult to use. Two configurations are available: – DWDI (elliptical technique) for pipes 1-4” (32-114 mm); – DWSI for pipes 4-10” (108-273 mm). The C-ARM is a good example of how practical challenges from the field inspire our engineering solutions. By listening closely to our customers’ needs, we continue developing tools that make digital radiography more efficient and easier to use in real inspection environments.
Constant evolution is at the heart of DR SYSTEMS. If a solution already performs well and has proven itself on hundreds of projects and tens of thousands of kilometers of pipelines — why change it? Because “good” is never the finish line. Our automatic annular weld inspection system XPRESS-SCAN reflects exactly this philosophy. We recently upgraded it by replacing the square SCANRAY 1515 detector with our exclusive long-panel SCANRAY 1230, and the impact was immediate: the number of required exposures was reduced dramatically — in some cases by more than half — by far accelerating the workflow, which is critical for time-sensitive pipeline projects. Take a 56” pipe as an example. With the previous configuration, forming a complete weld image typically required 40 exposures. With the upgraded XPRESS-SCAN 1230, the same weld now requires only 17! The comparison of the same-length segments below clearly shows the difference between the first and second generations. We know that every delay is expensive. That’s why DR SYSTEMS keeps refining its technology — helping our partners move faster, work smarter, and stay ahead. Start saving time. Increase efficiency. Choose progress.

Case study: digital radiography for risk-based inspection of small-bore piping and dead legs
Frame count in Direct Digital Radiography – what really changes? The difference you can see in the images below. In DR, three parameters are often confused: frame time, number of frames, and total exposure time. While they are connected, they influence the image in different ways. Frame time controls the signal level, meaning the grey value of the image. The longer the frame time, the higher the collected signal and the higher the grey level. In most cases, increasing frame time does not directly improve image quality (however, in certain situations, it may have an indirect effect). In turn, the number of frames directly affects image quality and sensitivity. When multiple frames are acquired, the detector averages them. The higher the number of frames, the stronger the noise reduction and the better the signal-to-noise ratio. As a result, noise decreases, sensitivity increases, and fine indications become more visible. A practical rule of thumb often used in industrial radiography is that when you double the number of frames, you can typically see one additional wire of the IQI. For example, if three wires are visible and four are required, doubling the frame count is usually the correct adjustment. With experience, operators can estimate after the first acquisition how much the frame count should be increased to reach the required sensitivity. Therefore, total exposure time for one image equals the number of frames multiplied by the frame time. The system collects all frames with the specified grey level and averages them to produce the final DCM image. DR SYSTEMS provides something conventional film and CR cannot – real-time dynamic adjustment of sensitivity through frame control. This flexibility allows users to balance speed and image quality depending on the exact inspection task. If this topic is relevant to your inspection practice, we conduct dedicated DR trainings and hands-on workshops focused on parameter optimization and real industrial cases. Contact us to discuss a session tailored to your team.
Can DR handle weld inspection in Light Gauge Steel Framing (LGSF)? Absolutely. The flaws in laser-welded thin-walled steel structures are more common than many expect, and their consequences can be serious. Pre-engineered buildings, industrial and warehouse facilities, hangars, modular units, add-on structures and lightweight framing systems — all face similar challenges. Thin base material, short and intermittent welds, as well as a complex joint geometry, make consistent weld quality difficult to achieve — and also hard to verify with NDT methods. This is where digital radiography proves its value again. Our experience shows that DR is highly effective for inspecting LGSF welds both before assembly and in finished structures. It reliably reveals typical imperfections such as porosity, undercut, lack of fusion and other planar and volumetric defects — exactly the flaws that matter most in light steel structures. With DR SYSTEMS, weld quality in LGSF is no longer a blind spot — it’s fully under control. - Object: galvanized steel plate, 2.5 mm wall thickness. - DR system: SCANRAY 2532. - Source: constant-potential X-ray generator (80 kV, 3 mA). - Exposition time: 5 frames by 5 seconds (25 seconds total). - Scheme: SWSI. - Obtained sensitivity: 0.1 mm. - Image allows: a) Locate numerous welding defects; b) Clearly observe zones of zinc coating evaporation in the weld area.

Saudi Aramco updates SAEP-1143 procedure – Digital Radiography takes the lead! Saudi Aramco has released an updated revision of the SAEP-1143 procedure, clearly reinforcing the industry’s transition toward digital radiography. The new requirements confirm what the NDT community has already recognized: DR is now the mandated inspection technology, offering higher efficiency, improved image quality, and better traceability. At DR SYSTEMS, we fully support this direction. To better understand the impact of the updated SAEP-1143, our Lead Technical Specialist, Dr. Iaroslav Iurin, has reviewed the document in detail, highlighted the key changes, and provided expert technical commentary on each of them. We have summarized these insights in a dedicated article on our website. These changes make inspections more efficient while maintaining high reliability – exactly what modern projects demand. Together with our trusted regional distributor GNDT Middle East, we are ready to support customers in the region with complaint DR equipment and long-term service support.
